After the “long calm” leading up to the bout, the military commander returns and the “instantaneous movement” begins.
When the caller opens the fan and calls out the names of the East and West wrestlers, the rikishi step into the ring, rinse their mouths, sprinkle salt, and meet their opponents in a crouching posture. The gyoji calls out, “Miatte”. The gyoji repeats this quiet partitioning several times, and the moment the gyoji’s military command is returned, a violent thrusting and pushing begins and a wild condensation takes place. For just a few seconds of wildness, there are several minutes, sometimes more than ten minutes if one counts from the ante.
