Kuma-dori

Kuma are “corners” deep and hidden, at the border between light and shade. In the aragoto(rough) style of kabuki, kuma-dori(“taking the corners”) refers to when actors accentuate with red and black ink the corners of their eyes, jaws, and cheekbones to exaggerate the faces of the personalities they play.
