Himorogi

Where no large trees presented themselves as natural abodes of the divine, people would plant four small trees and connect them with shimenawa to form a square enclosure called a himorogi to invite the visitation of the kami. The himorogi would be possessed by the kami, becoming the deity’s temporary abode and a manifestation of its miraculous power. It was a device for summoning the presence of the divine.
