Han and Wa in the Inner Palace

Japan used the Daigoku-den Hall and Zen Buddhism architecture as the global standard in China. The Daigoku-den Hall, where the official rulings of the Imperial Court were held, had a tiled roof and slate pavement, with pillars painted in vermilion and other richly colored hues, and the participants wore shoes on the podium. However, the Imperial Court built Daigoku-den and Chodo-in inside the Dainairi, and also built the Japanese-style Shikikan-den and Seiryoden on the same site. These halls were built of white wood with a cypress bark roof and were built on stilts, and visitors had to take off their shoes to enter. In other words, “Chinese” and “Japanese” were both present in the inner sanctuary.
