Japan’s foremost fashion district, Ginza attracts flagship stores of both domestic and foreign luxury brands. In the Edo period, the Ginza mint struck silver coins, and the Ginza local government office dealt with inspections and purchases of silver bullion. Local merchants dominated these businesses as purveyors to the government. The word for silver Japanese is gin.
