Flowers and shrubs enliven a lane

The architectural historian Bernard Rudofsky, author of The Kimono Mind (1965), was quite fond of how the Japanese find ways of enlivening the smallest spaces, such as the entryways and windowsills of apartments and townhouses, with potted plants and flowers─but also observed that the immensity of nature in the wild is not something that really suits the Japanese.
